Zubeida JafferZubeida Jaffer, a well-known South African reporter, was a key figure in resistance politics in the Western Cape during the Apartheid years. As a result she was detained twice. The first time she was forced to reveal the names of colleagues, a traumatic event that caused her severe psychological trauma. The second time she was pregnant, a fact gleefully used by the security police to their advantage. She testified at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Zubeida Jaffer is one of the most senior black women in the South African media. She is one of the seven judges of South Africa’s most esteemed newspaper award, the Mondi Newspaper Journalist Award. She is the Founding Editor of the Parliamentary Bureau for Independent Newspapers, which represents all 14 newspapers in the stable. She is also a political analyst for the Institute of Justice and Reconciliation. She has been a journalist for over twenty years and have won numerous awards. She was the first SA woman to receive the USA’s Foreign Journalist Award in 1994. She has also received an award from the New York Foreign Press Association for outstanding academic and professional achievements. She has a MSC from Columbia University, where she received the Prize for the best Foreign Student in 1996.
